Fetal surgery through an open uterus: with the repair to a diaphragmatic hernia complete, the fetus is about to be restored back to the womb. Here, the sutures on her abdomen are visible; legs are covered with plastic sheet. This operation, at the Hopital-Saint-Vincent-De-Paul, France, on 22nd July 1991, was the first successful European attempt at such a technique. The single defect of the 7-month fetus resulted in part of her bowel protruding into the chest cavity to obstruct lung development. Baby Alexandra was delivered by Caesarean section on 30th July, at 30 weeks, with no complications & made a good recovery.
