Varicose vein surgery. Surgeons operate on a woman's leg during an operation to remove varicose veins. Varicose veins are distended, lengthened and tortuous veins lying just below the surface of the skin. Stripping is done by tying off a varicose vein at an incision before passing a wire all the way down the vein and out at a second incision. The wire has a metal head that is tied to the vein at the first incision which is then closed. Finally the wire is pulled out of the second incision and the metal head removes the vein as it travels. The surgeons are wearing surgical gloves, caps, masks and gowns to maintain a sterile environment.
