Post-operational sinus. Surgeon cleaning a sinus formed by the re-opening of a scar from a previous operation. The sinus has opened along the length of one scar, and another scar runs between the patient's buttocks. The scars are from an operation to control the disorder Crohn's disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of the intestines. After the operation to remove some damaged intestines, the surgical incision became re-infected, causing it to reopen. In this case, the sinus is at the perineum, between the anus and genitals. The procedure for excision of infected sinuses involves removal of all infected tissue and leaving the wound to heal from the bottom up.
