Knee replacement surgery. View of a surgical team performing a knee replacement operation. The patient's leg has been painted with antiseptic paint and wrapped in a plastic sheet to help maintain sterile conditions. The surgeons are wearing high-security suits which provide complete protection against the spread of infection. These precautions are taken in cases of a patient having AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) or other infectious diseases which may be transmitted during surgery. Knee replacements use metal and plastic implants grafted onto healthy bone. They are done in cases of severe joint degradation, caused by arthritis or injury.
