Cannabis plant. Leaves of the cannabis, or hemp, plant (Cannabis sativa), the source of the illegal psychoactive drug marijuana. This plant is also cultivated for its tough fibres, which are used in textiles, and its seed oil. It is native to Central Asia, but is now found throughout the world. Despite medicinal applications, its use as a drug is illegal in most countries and so a licence is required for its cultivation.
