Unblocking blood vessel. Surgical procedure to remove a clot (thrombus) from a blood vessel. The surgeon is inserting a Fogarty catheter (red tube), which can be made to expand within the vessel by inflating a balloon at its tip. The vessel being unblocked is a surgically created junction between an artery and a vein (an arterio- venous fistula). These fistulas are created to aid blood dialysis. A fistula carries a large flow of blood, and will not collapse when needles are repeatedly inserted.
