Pressure sore surgery. Image 1 of 3. Surgery on a patient's hip to to remove dead tissue caused by a pressure sore. Pressure sores arise due to prolonged sitting or lying in the same position. A low supply of blood leads to damage to the skin, which may extend to underlying muscle and bone. In severe cases, surgery is needed to remove dead and infected tissue, and to graft skin over the affected area. Pressure sores can be prevented by frequent position changes, sheepskin padding and using a mattress filled with air, gel or water to reduce pressure. For a sequence of the surgery, see images M551/316-318.
