Ankle surgery. Image 1 of 6. Surgeon operating on an ankle while metal retractors hold the incision open to reveal the bone (centre). This operation is being performed to strengthen the ankle, which was weakened by a previous injury. It involves inserting screws to fuse the ankle's talonavicular joint (where the talus and navicular bones meet). Screws were also inserted into a tarsometatarsal (tarsal and metatarsal bones) joint in the foot to relieve arthritis caused by the injury. For a series showing this procedure, see images M551/535 - M551/540.
