Ankle surgery. Image 6 of 6. Surgeon cleaning an ankle after stitching up the surgical wound (lower left). This operation was performed to strengthen the ankle, which was weakened by a previous injury. It involved inserting screws to fuse the ankle's talonavicular joint (where the talus and navicular bones meet). Screws were also inserted into a tarsometatarsal (tarsal and metatarsal bones) joint in the foot to relieve arthritis caused by the injury. For a series showing this procedure, see images M551/535.
