Anaesthetic equipment. A male anaesthetist in an operating theatre, dressed in a surgical outfit, sits by and makes an adjustment to his anaesthetic equipment. Pipes (at left) supply the anaesthetic gases such as nitrous oxide and halothane while surgery is in progress. The equipment can also provide artificial ventilation when muscle relaxants are used. Pressure meters are visible which control the composition of the gas mixture. There is also an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor at top, which displays the patient's heart trace.
