Anaesthesia. Anaesthetist monitoring the condition of a patient under general anaesthesia during a surgical procedure. The monitors at top right indicate several parameters such as the patient's heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, blood oxygenation and exhaled carbon dioxide. Sometimes the anaesthetic is delivered together with muscle relaxant drugs and in this case the patient is not able to breathe naturally. A tube, as shown here, is inserted into the mouth of the patient and artificial ventilation is maintained by the anaesthetist by mean of an air balloon (green at bottom).
