Anaesthetist. An anaesthetist adjusts tubes inserted into the mouth of a patient in surgery. These supply anaesthetic gases, such as nitrous oxide and halothane, that maintain unconsciousness throughout the operation. The equipment is also used to provide artificial ventilation, which maintains breathing if muscle relaxants are used. Anaesthetists are not only responsible for inducing and maintaining general anaesthesia, but must also monitor the patient's vital signs and breathing throughout an operation and during recovery afterwards.
