Anaesthesia. View of a female anaesthetist checking a syringe of anaesthetic. Anaesthesia is the loss of sensation. General anaesthesia affects the entire body and is accompanied by loss of consciousness. This state is induced for and maintained during major surgery. It is produced by a combination of drugs and inhaled gases under the control of the specialised anaesthetist. The anaesthetist is wearing a surgical cap, gown, face mask and gloves to maintain sterile conditions.
