Anaesthesia. Masked female anaesthetist prepares a syringe of anaesthetic. Anaesthesia is the loss of body sensation. General anaesthesia affects the entire body and is accompanied by the loss of consciousness. This state is maintained during major surgery. It is produced by a combination of drugs, such as by intravenous injection or inhaled gases, under the control of the specialised anaesthetist. The anaesthetist is wearing a surgical cap, gown, face-mask and gloves to maintain sterile conditions in the operating theatre.
