Preparing for surgery. Theatre team selecting instruments for distraction osteogenesis surgery, a procedure that enables progressive bone lengthening. This involves cutting the femur (thigh bone) and inserting a telescopic nail into the shaft. The nail will then be extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth. The surgery is often performed on individuals with bone deformities or shorter bones than normal. Photographed at Montmartre Surgery Centre, Paris, France.
