Coronary artery angioplasty being performed on a male patient in a U.S. hospital. Angioplasty is a technique that uses a balloon catheter to free an obstruction within an artery. The deflated balloon is introduced through a guide catheter via an artery in the leg and manoeuvered using x-ray imaging until reaches the arterial obstruction. The balloon is then gradually inflated so that it compresses the obstruction (a fatty atheromatous plaque) and allows blood to flow more freely in the vessel.
