Heart surgery. Surgeon examining X-rays (angiographs) on screens during a heart operation called an angioplasty. He is using the screens to follow the narrow tubes (catheters) he has inserted into the patient's blood vessels. This angioplasty operation involves inserting a deflated balloon catheter through a guide catheter to reach a blockage in a blood vessel. The balloon will then be inflated to compress the blockage and re-establish the blood flow. Here, angioplasties are being performed on the lower limbs and the coronary arteries of the heart to treat arteritis and angina pectoris respectively. Photographed at the A. Pare Hospital, France.
