Heart surgery. Surgeon checking on a patient's vital signs following coronary artery bypass and laser heart surgery. Chest drains (lower right) have been left in place to remove fluid from the operation site, preventing infection or the build-up of pressure. In coronary artery bypass surgery, sections of veins are used to bypass narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. These normally supply the heart muscle with oxygen. An excimer laser was also used to cut small holes in other areas of heart muscle to increase the blood supply there.
