Heart surgery. Patient undergoing cardiac surgery. During the operation, the patient is attached to a heart-lung machine (centre right) that both pumps the blood and oxygenates it. The machine is also used to deliver medication and control blood temperature. The tubes carrying blood are seen between the patient and the machine. The anticoagulant drug heparin is used to prevent the blood clotting in the machine.
