Heart surgery. Surgeon preparing blood vessels in the groin of a patient for attachment to a heart- lung machine. During heart surgery the heart is temporarily stopped to allow it to be operated on, and to prevent blood from obscuring the surgeon's view. A heart-lung machine takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, oxygenating the blood and pumping it around the body. The patient is about to undergo a mitral valve replacement.
