Heart surgery. Two surgeons preparing blood vessels in the groin of a patient for attachment to a heart-lung machine. During heart surgery the heart is temporarily stopped to allow it to be operated on, and to prevent blood from obscuring the surgeon's view. A heart-lung machine takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, oxygenating the blood and pumping it around the body. The surgeons are wearing binocular magnifying lenses. The patient is about to undergo a mitral valve replacement.
