Treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Neurosurgeon looking through a microscope while removing dopamine-secreting brain tissue from the locus niger of 8-week-old human foetuses. This tissue will be microinjected directly into the brain of a patient with Parkinson's Disease. Parkinson's Disease is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-secreting nerve cells in the brain. The foetal brain tissue replaces these destroyed cells. While there have been encouraging results following this type of surgery, it has been hard to validate the results and it is still not yet known whether it is a viable treatment.
