Treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Neurosurgeons operating on the brain of a patient with Parkinson's Disease. They are microinjecting dopamine-secreting brain tissue removed from the locus niger of 8-week-old human foetuses directly into the patient's brain. The frame around the patient's head allows electrodes and implant needles to be aimed at sites in the brain. Parkinson's Disease is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-secreting nerve cells in the brain. The foetal brain tissue replaces these destroyed cells. While there have been encouraging results following this type of surgery, it has been hard to validate the results and it is still not yet known whether it is a viable treatment.
