Eye lens surgery. Surgeon using a microscope during cataract surgery. He is using surgical tools to remove the lens from the eye of a patient with a cataract. A cataract is an abnormal cloudy and opaque area that can form in the lens of an eye. The condition will lead to blindness unless it is treated. A cataract operation involves cutting the cornea (at the front of the eye), removing the cloudy lens, and replacing it with a plastic fixed-focus lens. This operation is being carried out at the Samara Ophthalmology Clinic, by Professor Andrei Zolotarev, the chief physician. Photographed in 2006, in Samara, Russia.
