Cataract surgery. Image 4 of 6. Patient undergoing cataract surgery. A probe (purple) is being inserted into the lens chamber. This emits high frequency sound (ultrasound) which breaks up the lens, allowing it to be sucked out through the probe, a process known as phacoemulsification. A prosthetic lens will replace the removed one. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. For a series showing the surgical procedure, see images M570/186 - M570/191.
