Cataract surgery. Image 5 of 6. Patient undergoing cataract surgery. They have just had their faulty lens removed by phacoemulsification and the eye is now ready to have a replacement prosthetic lens inserted. Metal retractors are holding back the eyelids during the operation. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. For a series showing the surgical procedure, see images M570/186 - M570/191.
