Cataract surgery. Image 6 of 6. Patient undergoing cataract surgery. An artificial lens is being inserted into the eye after the defective lens has been removed. Metal retractors are holding back the eyelids during the operation. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. For a series showing the surgical procedure, see images M570/186 - M570/191.
