Cochlear implant surgery. Surgeon burrs a hollow behind the ear in the skull of a deaf patient to insert the receiver of a cochlear implant (CI). Attached to the receiver is an electrode array that is inserted deep into the cochlear of the inner ear, enabling sound impulses to reach the brain. After 4-6 weeks rehabilitation the patient is ready to wear externally a transmitter, microphone and a sound processor box which detect sounds. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. The cochlear implant gives the patient their first awareness of sounds and speech, and assists the patient to lip-read.
