Caption

Tonsillectomy. CLose-up of an enlarged tonsil that has just been removed from the the mouth of a patient during tonsillectomy (tonsil removal) surgery. Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue that fight infections in the upper respiratory tract. Enlarged tonsils can be caused by repeated throat infections. If the swelling does not subside, then the tonsils can be removed, as seen here.
