Tonsillectomy. Patient's mouth packed with gauze after tonsillectomy (tonsil removal) surgery. The blue mouthpiece (bottom) holds the mouth open. Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue that fight infections in the upper respiratory tract. Enlarged tonsils can be caused by repeated throat infections. If the swelling does not subside, then the tonsils can be removed. To view the removed tonsil and the mouth prior to tonsil removal, see images M572/050 and M572/049 respectively.
