Caption

Donor human kidney being prepared prior to a transplant operation. A saline solution is passed into the kidney to maintain its filtration system, and to preserve its healthy state. This healthy kidney (donated, as the case may be, from a living patient or a cadaver) is then transplanted into a patient with defective kidneys. Kidney transplant is the most common of organ transplant operations, and the most successful. The chief danger is rejection of the donated kidney; all transplant patients must take immunosuppressant drugs for life to prevent rejection. The human body can survive on the function of one kidney.
