Liver transplant operation. Surgical team in an operating theatre conduct a liver transplant operation. At lower frame, the surgeons are seen around the opened abdomen of the patient, working to remove the diseased liver. At upper right, two surgeons prepare the healthy donor liver. The donor liver is perfused in a saline solution, with fluid introduced into the liver tissue to keep it alive. Liver transplantation is a last resort in patients suffering from severe liver disease and liver failure. The operation may be conducted in chronic hepatitis, advanced cirrhosis and biliary atresia. Patients may survive for 5 years or more.
