Donor liver preparation. A team of transplant surgeons prepare a donor liver for transplantation. The surgeons are using forceps & scissors to cut and suture the liver ready for transplantation. The donor liver is also undergoing perfusion (washing with oxygenated fluids), usually performed in a saline (salt & water) solution. Functioning donor livers are obtained from patients who have suffered brain death. They can be stored in cold saline for up to 8 hours. Liver transplants are performed on patients with life-threatening liver disease. Part of transplant image sequence: M575/035-047.
