Donor liver. View of a donor liver prepared for organ transplant surgery. The liver is seen cut to fit into the recipient. It is also undergoing perfusion (washing with oxygenated fluids). The cut surface of the donor liver is dotted with black clips which stop individual blood vessels within the liver from leaking once transplanted. Functioning donor livers are obtained from patients who have suffered brain death. They can be stored in cold saline for up to 8 hours. Liver transplants are performed on patients with life-threatening liver disease. Part of transplant image sequence: M575/035-047.
