Liver transplant. Surgical team in an operating theatre perform a liver transplant operation on a patient. The surgeons have made an incision in the upper abdomen of the patient and are now isolating the hepatic vessels which carry blood, lymph and bile to and from the liver. This is the prehepatic phase of the operation. The diseased liver is removed and a donor liver will be artificially connected. Liver transplantation is a last resort in patients suffering severe liver disease and liver failure. Donor livers are obtained from patients who are brain dead.
