Liver transplant. Grafting of a donor liver into the abdomen of a patient during a transplant operation. The donor liver is seen on a sterile cloth, covered with ice (for preservation) over a clamped opening of the patient's abdomen. A surgeon's gloved hands are seen (at top) holding forceps with which to manipulate the vessels of the donor liver. During this phase of the transplant, the new liver is sewn into place and all the hepatic vessels that connect it to the body are artificially connected. The surgeon will then watch for signs of life from the new organ. Part of transplant image sequence M575/035-047.
