Liver transplant. The sutured abdomen of a patient after a liver transplant operation. Two drainage tubes are seen emerging from the abdominal cavity. These are connected to plastic bottles which will drain any excess fluid within the wound. Liver transplants are performed only on patients as a last resort after liver failure or severe liver disease. Fully functional donor livers are obtained from brain-dead patients. The transplant operation involves removing the damaged liver and artificially connecting a donor liver in it's place. Part of transplant image sequence M575/035- 047.
