Donor kidney preparation. Surgeon perfusing a donor kidney in a kidney-shaped bowl prior to a transplant operation. Perfusion solution is supplied through the tube at lower left. The kidney is being stored in ice to maintain its condition. Donor kidneys must also have their fat removed and their blood vessels prepared prior to transplantation. Kidney transplantation is the simplest and most commonly performed organ transplant, and it has a very high success rate. It is done to replace kidneys with chronic kidney failure.
