Kidney transplant. Surgeons irrigating a kidney prior to transplantation. Here, cooling saline is passed through the kidney (bottom centre) via the syringe at centre left. This keeps the kidney cool and sterile, allowing it to live outside the body. Transplants are performed in cases where the patient's kidneys no longer function correctly, or when a kidney is cancerous. Kidney transplantation is the simplest and most commonly performed organ transplant, and it has a very high success rate. The gowns, face masks and caps are to maintain a sterile environment.
