Liver transplant. View from above of a surgical team performing a liver transplant operation. This operation is performed when the patient's liver is severely damaged by cirrhosis or hepatitis. A healthy liver is taken from a recently-deceased donor, replacing the diseased organ. The operation is difficult, although around half of all patients survive for more than five years. Immunosuppressant drugs must be taken for life to prevent rejection of the foreign organ by the body. Photographed at Cochin Hospital in France.
