Treatment of acute leukaemia by bone marrow transplant: bone marrow harvested from both donor and recipient is slowly deep frozen under carefully controlled conditions at a rate of 2 degrees C. per minute. A chemical (dimethylsulphoxide) is added to preserve the cells against cold damage. The bone marrow is stored at a temperature of -196 degrees C. , and thawed rapidly when required for transplant.
