Bone marrow transplant: surgical team harvesting bone marrow, donated for transplanting (grafting) into a compatible recipient suffering from certain types of life-threatening anaemia & leukaemia. Compatible marrow is sucked up through large-bore needles from punctures made into the iliac crests, the ridges of bone on top of the pelvis, & stored in a plastic bag. Donated marrow is filtered & treated prior to infusion into the recipient, after they have received pre- transplant conditioning by chemotherapy or whole body irradiation. This may be required to destroy any active cancer cells & disable the immune system & thus prevent graft rejection.
