Sunburn research. Researcher holds a tray with samples of artificially-grown pigment cells (mela- nocytes) from three types of skin used in sunburn research. The skin types are (from left to right): black; asian; and caucasian ("white"). The cells have the same structure & behaviour as those in natural skin. The samples can be used to measure the melanocytes' production of protective mel- anin pigment when exposed to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The effectiveness of applied skin cream in blocking UV rays can also be tested using the cells. Overexposure to UV in sunlight can cause sunburn, premature ageing & cancers. Photographed at the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris, France.
