Sunburn research. Researcher views a culture of skin pigment cells (melanocytes) grown artifici- ally for use in sunburn research. The monitor of a video light microscope (upper centre) shows a magnified image of the cells. The melanocytes have the same structure & behaviour as those found in natural skin. The cells' production of protective melanin pigment when exposed to harmful UV rays will be measured during the research. The effect- iveness of applied skin creams in blocking UV light can also be tested using the cells. Overexposure to UV rays in sunlight can cause sunburn, premature ageing & cancers. Photographed at the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris, France.
