Bone marrow transplant. Surgical team during a bone marrow transplant (BMT) operation. Bone marrow is found inside bones and produces blood cells. If it fails to work, life- threatening anaemia (lack of oxygen-carrying red blood cells) or immune deficiencies (due to a lack of white blood cells) occur. For a BMT, bone marrow is taken from a donor (usually a close relative) or the patient if some remains healthy. The patient's remaining bone marrow is then destroyed using drugs or radiation, and the donor marrow is transfused into their bloodstream, from where it is taken up by the bones. Photographed at the Gustave Roussy Institute, France.
