Bone bank freezer store. Frozen femur (thigh) and tibia (shin) bones. Bone may be stored between -40 and -100 degrees Celsius for up to 5 years. Bone is a commonly transplanted tissue, second only to blood. Bone tissue is donated both after death and from patients undergoing joint replacement surgery and other bone operations. The donor and bone are carefully screened for disease to ensure the bone is healthy. Bone is most often used in a ground up form to replace diseased bone and fill the spaces around a joint replacement. Speciality bone grafts include whole bones, and parts of bones. These are often used to replace cancerous bone. Photographed in the Rizzoli Institute, Bologna, Italy.
