Baldness reduction patient (First of 9 images). Top view of the head of a male patient before baldness reduction surgery. The patient suffers from male pattern baldness (alopecia) affecting the crown of his head. This will be treated by cosmetic surgery of the type known as baldness reduction, an alternative to hair transplant. The technique consists of cutting out an area of bald skin. Surrounding areas of hair-bearing scalp are then stretched to replace the bald area and the incisions are sutured closed. The procedure is conducted under local anaesthetic.
