Baldness reduction surgery (Fourth of 9 images). Surgeon's gloved hands work at the incision site in the scalp of a male patient during baldness reduction surgery. The patient suffers from male pattern baldness (alopecia) affecting the crown of his head. This is being treated by cosmetic surgery of the type known as baldness reduction, an alternative to hair transplant. The technique consists of cutting out an area of bald skin as seen here. Surrounding areas of hair-bearing scalp are then stretched to replace the bald area and the incision is sutured closed. The surgery is conducted under local anaesthetic.
