Hair transplant surgery. Image 2 of 3. Hair plugs being implanted into the scalp of a patient with male pattern baldness (alopecia). This treatment (cosmetic surgery) is known as punch grafting, and is the most common method of hair transplant. Metal "pins" are used to punch holes in and to remove small areas of bald scalp. Grafts of hairy scalp (seen) are then implanted and secured in place until natural healing takes place. The procedure is conducted under local anaesthetic. See images M590/186-188 for a sequence of this procedure.
