Hair transplant surgery. Image 4 of 4. Sutures following a hair harvesting procedure on the scalp of a patient with male pattern baldness (alopecia). This procedure requires that an area of hairy scalp is removed to provide individual hair plugs. The plugs are then implanted in the patient's bald area in a treatment (cosmetic surgery) known as punch grafting, the most common method of hair transplant. Metal "pins" are used to punch holes in and to remove small areas of bald scalp. Grafts of hairy scalp are then implanted and secured in place until natural healing takes place. See images M590/189-192 for a sequence of this procedure.
